How to Prepare your quilt

Tips to Ensure Seamless Longarm Quilting Results.

Proper preparation is the key to achieving beautiful, professional results with longarm quilting. Follow these simple tips to make sure your quilt is ready for quilting and to help ensure a smooth, efficient process from start to finish at Legacy Quilt Company.

Book Your Quilting Appointment Online

Use our online booking form to schedule your longarm quilting appointment. Booking in advance reserves your spot in our quilting queue and allows us to plan for your project, ensuring a smooth and timely experience.

Press the Quilt Top

Before submitting your quilt, give the quilt top a final press from the front side only. Pressing helps remove wrinkles and sets seams, allowing the quilting design to stitch evenly and look its best.

Remove Loose Threads

Take a moment to remove any loose or dangling threads from your quilt top. This small step prevents dark threads from showing through light fabrics and keeps your finished quilt clean and polished.

Trim and Square the Edges

Make sure the edges of your quilt top are straight and square. Clean, even edges help the quilt load accurately onto the longarm quilting frame and contribute to a smoother, more consistent finished result.

Secure Pieced Edges

If your quilt has pieced or uneven edges, sew a reinforcing seam around the entire perimeter of the quilt top. This helps stabilize the edges and prevents seams from pulling apart during the quilting process.

Prepare the Backing Fabric Properly

Press all seams in the backing fabric open and remove all selvage edges. Well-prepared backing fabric creates a smooth quilting surface and helps reduce puckering or tension issues during quilting.

Provide Extra Backing Fabric

Longarm quilting requires backing fabric that is larger than the quilt top. Since the backing is attached to the frame rails at both the top and bottom, please ensure the backing extends at least 4 inches beyond the quilt top on all sides. Larger is fine — smaller cannot be accepted.

Clearly Mark the Top Edge

Clearly mark the top edge of both the quilt top and the backing fabric. This helps ensure your quilt is loaded correctly on the longarm frame and that the quilting design is positioned exactly as you intend.

Longarm Quilting Pricing Guide

At Legacy Quilt Company, pricing is straightforward, fair and easy to calculate. Our longarm quilting rates are based on the size of your quilt, so you always know what to expect before we begin.

How to Calculate Your Quilting Cost

Calculating your quilting price is simple and transparent:

  • Measure

Measure the length and width of your quilt top.

  • Multiply the length

Multiply the length by the width to find the total square inches.

  • Quilting Rate

Multiply that number by the quilting rate of $0.02 per square inch.

  • Quilting Cost

The final number is your quilting cost — clear, fair, and easy to understand.

Standard Quilting Rates

This rate applies to edge-to-edge longarm quilting, which is ideal for memory quilts, t-shirt quilts, everyday quilts and gifts.
